Main Street Construction Project

Q & A
General Information:
The Main Street Construction Project here in McGregor will be split into two Phases.  Phase 1 will occur this year (2023) and will greatly impact our downtown business district area from the intersection of Main, B and 3rd Streets to the riverfront.  Phase 2 will occur next year (2024) and will impact Main Street west of the intersection of Main, B & 3rd Streets, to the Catholic Church and turning slightly onto Buell Avenue.
Phase 1:
Construction is set to begin Monday, April 3rd, weather permitting, and will be ongoing through fall.  While this project is necessary and unavoidable for our community to address needed underground utility improvements, efforts are being made to minimize the impact to our businesses whenever possible.  This includes making sure that tourists, patrons, tenants, vendors, distributors and delivery truck drivers will still have reasonable accessibility to get to the downtown businesses, the riverfront, Kwik Star and the Post Office.  During the interim phase of the project, through April and May, the Main Street road closure will be limited to a shorter span of Main Street, largely in front of Kwik Star and our riverfront.  This will allow for more accessibility through downtown and less disruption to the business district during this time.   As we move beyond the interim phase, likely at the end of May/ early June, Main Street will be closed to both lanes of traffic from the intersection of Main, B and 3rd Streets through to the riverfront.

Accessibility into McGregor: Traffic into McGregor will only be accessible to traffic via Business 18 (top of the hill), the Great River Road or Eagle Drive/Cemetery Hill.  From any of these entry points, Main Street will be open until the intersection of Main, 3rd Street and B Street, as shown on the map. -->  Incoming traffic on Hwy 18/76 (from Marquette) will be prohibited.
Picture
Accessibility to Downtown:  Main Street, at the intersection of Main, 3rd & B Streets, will be barricaded, preventing through traffic. At this point, motorists will have to turn left or right to continue proceeding east into the downtown area, via side streets.   Wayfinding signage will be in place here directing traffic to specific business who choose to participate in the signage opportunities.

Accessibility around Downtown:  Additional wayfinding signage will be in place to help direct motorists and pedestrians.  In the construction zone there will be no cross through traffic across Main Street for motorists however there will be a hard surface cross through path across Main Street at the intersection of Main & A Streets.

Accessibility to the Riverfront:  The Nauti Marina and Big Buoys Tiki Bar will remain open and accessible to pedestrians this year.  Accessibility for motorists to access the boat launch and the riverfront parking lot areas is unlikely for most of the duration of Phase 1.  Patrons accessing the riverfront are encouraged to use the First Street Parking Lot.  Those wishing to access Nauti Rentals and boat slip holders at the north end of the Nauti Marina will still be able to access the north Marina parking lot through Marquette.  *Please note, access from Marquette to the north Marina is only for Marina slip holders, Nauti Rentals customers and those who own the riverfront trailers next to the marina.  The road will not be passable beyond the former Fish & Wildlife Center.  Parking at the north Marina is only for Marina customers and slip holders.

Parking:  Wayfinding signage will be in place encouraging the use of the First Street Parking Lot and the parking lot next to the Silver Dollar (located at the intersection of Main & B Streets).  Parking lines for our street parking will be repainted, and in some cases, shifting from parallel to angled parking to generate more parking opportunities when possible.  To ensure patrons and tourists can find parking, some of the parking will be limited to 2 hour parking during business hours.

Accessibility to Commercial Delivery Staging Areas:  There will be two of them - one on the northside of Main Street and one on the south. Turning either direction at the barricades on Main Street will lead trucks to a Commercial Delivery Staging Area.  More information on Commercial Delivery Staging areas can be found here.

*Notes:
1. Trucks over 5 tons will need to use the South Commercial Staging area or turn left on 4th Street to access Anne Street as there is a 5 ton limit on the 3rd Street bridge.

2. The West side of A Street is the Commercial Delivery Staging area to include No Parking to other motorists and the East side of A Street will become angled parking.
